Bamako, Mali — In a country where nearly 70% of the population is under the age of 30, the demand for relevant and practical education is urgent. Yet, for many young Malians—especially those pursuing science and technology—hands-on learning opportunities have remained limited.

To help close this gap, STEMpower has established a new STEM Center at the University of Sciences, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB). This Center now serves as a vibrant hub for applied learning in digital electronics and system design, equipped with test benches, logic circuits, Arduino kits, and high-performance computer systems.

Professor Mahamadou Diakité, Rector, University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB), remarked “STEMpower’s electronic lab at USTTB is a game-changer for Mali—advancing education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic growth. It empowers students through hands-on biomedical engineering training, improves diagnostics, strengthens local capacity, and drives innovation. This vibrant center is crucial for building sustainable expertise and reducing dependence on imported technologies and services.

“STEMpower’s donation to our university is transforming how our students engage with technology,” said Dr. Hamidou Sagara, Head of Electrical Engineering at USTTB. “We now have the tools to provide hands-on training in electronics, telecommunications, and programmable systems.”

USTTB students are already putting their skills into action. Hamadoun Camara, a student at the university, shared his experience: “Thanks to the equipment from STEMpower, we’re able to use VHDL software to program logic devices. For example, this morning, I wrote and simulated a decoder program. That was almost impossible before STEMpower installed our STEM Center.”

With laboratory equipment for 10 more STEM Centers currently en route, STEMpower is expanding its reach across nearly every country in Sub-Saharan Africa—ensuring that the next generation of innovators has access to quality, practical STEM education.
